Thank you for your query. The axis of the black brush should be parallel to the plane of the tone arm. With bristles up, the brush is raised from beneath the cartridge until the stylus tip is buried in the surface of the fibers. Then gently move the brush away from the tone arm pivot, allowing the fibers to surround and conform to the shape of the stylus tip. This will help remove baked on (or pyrolysed) material from the diamond as well any fluffy or loosely attached contaminants.
